Renting vs DIY for party backdrops: how to decide
Updated October 2026 · General guidance, not advice about any specific business.
Renting gets you a finished, tested backdrop, and often delivery and setup, without owning anything afterwards. DIY gives you full control and something to keep, in exchange for your time, tools and storage. Many hosts land in between: renting the frame or the backdrop and doing the balloons, or hiring a decorator for the centerpiece and doing smaller touches themselves.
The right choice comes down to how much time you have before and on the day, how you'll transport it, and how much the result matters in photos.
Your options
- Full service: a decorator or rental company delivers, installs and removes the backdrop.
- Rental pickup: you collect a backdrop or frame and set it up yourself.
- Hybrid: rent the structure, such as a shimmer wall or arch frame, and add your own balloons or florals.
- DIY: buy or build everything yourself, from fabric and frames to balloon garlands.
When renting makes sense
- The setup window is short, or you'll be busy with guests and food on the day.
- You want a specific look, like a flower wall or shimmer wall, that is hard to make well at home.
- You don't have a vehicle that fits large panels or frames, or anywhere to store them afterwards.
- Photos are a priority and you want something that has been tested at other events.
When DIY works
- You have time in the days before the event and help on the day.
- The design is simple: a fabric drape, a short garland or a balloon cluster.
- You'll reuse the materials, or you enjoy making things.
- The venue gives you plenty of time to set up and take down.
For balloon garlands, estimate how many balloons you need before you buy with our balloon garland calculator, and do a test section at home first to check colors and fullness.
The hidden parts of DIY
The supplies are only part of the job. Plan for:
- Tools: a balloon pump or electric inflator, a sizer, tape strips, a frame or stand, zip ties and weights.
- Time: inflating and building takes longer than most first-timers expect, so start earlier than you think you need to.
- Transport: garlands and frames are bulky, and balloons don't like hot cars.
- Take-down: someone has to dismantle and clear everything at the end of the night.
Questions to ask a rental company or decorator
- What exactly is included: delivery, setup, take-down, weights or stands?
- How big is the backdrop, and how much floor space does it need?
- What happens if something is damaged?
- What time will you arrive and leave, and does that fit the venue's schedule?

Frequently asked questions
- Is it cheaper to make a party backdrop yourself?
- Not always. Once you count tools, frames, transport and your time, DIY can cost more than expected, especially for a one-off. Compare a full quote with a realistic DIY shopping list before you decide.
- Can I rent a backdrop and add my own balloons?
- Often, yes. Many hosts rent a frame or backdrop and add their own garland. Ask the rental company what can be attached and how.
- How long does a DIY balloon garland take?
- Longer than most people expect, especially the first time. Do a short test section at home to see how long it takes you before the event.
- What tools do I need for a DIY balloon garland?
- At minimum a pump or inflator, garland tape or strip, and something to hang it from. A balloon sizer helps get consistent sizes.
