Balloon garland calculator

Estimate how many balloons of each size a garland needs from its length and fullness. The assumptions are shown and adjustable. Every number below is an estimate based on the assumptions listed under the calculator.

Example: a 10-foot standard organic garland

10 ft × 10 per foot = about 100 balloons before spares.

Estimate only. Real counts depend on how the garland is packed and how large each balloon is inflated. Foil balloons and greenery are not included.

How the estimate works

Balloons = garland length × balloons per foot, split by the size mix, each size rounded up, then spares added. Published rules of thumb differ, so our defaults are stated here and every one can be changed in the calculator.

  • Light (6 per foot) is the top of the lighter range above (about 4 to 6 per foot).
  • Standard (10 per foot) is the top of the 8 to 10 per foot "basic structure" range, close to the "lush" figure of about 11 per foot.
  • Full (14 per foot) is the basic structure plus small fillers: 8 to 10 plus 2 to 7 per foot gives roughly 10 to 17, and we use 14.
  • The organic size mix (40% 5-inch, 50% 11-inch, 10% 16-inch) follows the published mix above. The bold and simple mixes are our own variations.
  • Spares default to 10%, the allowance for pops suggested above.
  • Each size is rounded up, so totals can be a few balloons above length × per foot.

Sources we used

  • Balloon Decoration Guide: balloon arch instructions: For organic arches and garlands it suggests 8 to 10 balloons per foot for the basic structure, plus 2 to 7 small 5-inch balloons per foot as extras.
  • calculate.co.nz: balloon arch calculator: It suggests about 36 balloons per metre (about 11 per foot) for a lush organic garland, 12 to 20 per metre (about 4 to 6 per foot) for a lighter classic arch, a mix of about half 11-inch, 40% 5-inch and 10% 16-inch balloons, and around 10% spare for pops.

Questions

How many balloons do I need per foot of garland?
Published rules of thumb vary. This calculator assumes 6 per foot for a light garland, 10 for a standard organic garland and 14 for a full one with small fillers. Change the number if your design is different.
Why is the result an estimate?
Balloon counts depend on how tightly the balloons are packed, how big each one is inflated, and the style of the design. Build a short test section, count what you used, and put your own per-foot number into the calculator.
Does this include foil balloons or greenery?
No. It counts round latex balloons by size. Add foil letters, shapes and greenery separately.
Should I buy extra balloons?
Yes. Some balloons pop or come out the wrong size. The calculator adds 10% spares by default, and you can change it.
